How to Upgrade Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 to Android 4.0.4 Using AOKP ROM Build 38



Indeed, most Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 want to taste the latest Android operating system Ice Cream Sandwich on their devices. Apparently, Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 itself was launched using the Operating System Android Gingerbread in which it is not the latest and seem not as beutiful as Ice Cream Sandwich. Unfortunately, Samsung itself has announced that there is no update available for the Galaxy Tab to Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

Thanks to forum-xda members who always develop the system of Android and provide the update of Ice Cream Sandwich for the Samsung Galaxy Tab. So, for those who want to try their devices to running on this latest Android, here is the tutorial to make your wish come true.

Using this ROM packs a stock Android experience with smooth and fast performance together with an inbuilt ROM Control Mod that allows for further customization. Do note that this ROM is still undergoing constant development, so it may still carry several bugs and issues. If you want to try this custom ROM because you are itching to have ICS on your tablet, you can do so just by following the requirements and instructions below.

Preparation before upgrading Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000:

  • A rooted Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 with ClockworkMod Recovery installed. Guide to root from here
  • A Windows PC and 7-Zip, WinRAR, or any other program that can extract archive files.
  • Samsung KIES installed in your PC to have it automatically install the needed Samsung USB drivers.
  • Download AOKP ROM Build 38 Rebuild 1 package from here (aokp_p1_build-38 rebuild 1.zip, 126.75 MB) and Google Apps package from here (gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip, 49.6 MB)
  • You device battrey should at least 75% charged to avoid interruption during the process.
  • Backup all personal data on your phone to make sure you have a copy of your personal data (e.g., contacts, SMS, MMS, Internet settings, Wi-Fi passwords, and the like) in case the procedure in this guide erases such data. Guide to backup from here or here

Steps to upgrade Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 to Android 4.0.4 Using AOKP ROM Build 38 after you completed the preparation above, follow the steps below:

  • Copy the AOKP ROM Build 38 Rebuild 1 package and the GApps (Google Apps) package to the root of the tablet’s internal SD card.
  • Switch off your tablet and reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery. To do this, hold the Volume Up key and Power button together until the screen turns on, then you can release the buttons.
  • Select Wipe Data/Factory Reset, then choose Yes on the next screen.
  • Select Wipe Cache Partition and confirm the action on the next screen.
  • Go back to the main menu and select Advanced. From there, select Wipe Dalvik Cache and confirm the action on the next screen.
  • Select Install ZIP From SD Card. Select Choose ZIP From SD Card and locate the aokp_p1_build-38 rebuild 1.zip file. Confirm the action on the next screen to flash the ROM.
  • Go back to the main menu and install the GApps package in the same manner as in step 6. This will install apps like the Play Store, Gmail, etc.
  • When the installation is completely done, go back to the main menu then select Reboot System Now. This will reboot your tablet to the installed AOKP ROM. Booting for the first time may take up to 5 minutes.

getting "assert failed ..." and "E:Error in /sdcard/AOKP......zip". "Installation aborted". GApps installation works fine.

In addition to installation, cannot boot past first screen showing Galaxy Tab.

Is there any way I can copy the AOKP package from the external SD card to the internal through ClockworkMod Recovery? I cannot boot the tab but can access recovery.

Can I keep both gingerbread and Ice cream sandwich in my gal tab? I mean, dualboot between android gingerbread and ice cream sandwich.
