Samsung Promotes BlackBerry Messenger App Earlier on Africa

Actually on September 27 BlackBerry Messenger was supposed to hit the Android and iOS app stores today, but there’s nothing just yet (but you can try the beta). More interesting is that Samsung has now kicked-off its promotion of BBM – earlier this month the two companies struck a deal to promote the messenger in Africa.

CrackBerry forum member PauloPlmenta spotted an ad of the Galaxy S4 running BlackBerry Messenger during a football game (Manchester United vs. Chelsea) broadcast in Mozambique.

Samsung Mobile Ghana is also taking part of the campaign by posting teasers on Facebook.

The post reads”Another messenger is coming on Samsung phones sooner than you think……..what is it?

There was even a video ad that prematurely made its way to YouTube, but has since been pulled down. I’m not sure if this is the same video, but it shows the Galaxy S4 next to what appears to be the Galaxy Star and the Galaxy Note 10.1. It’s not clear how long this video will stay up.

Motorola Nexus 5, A New Nexus Family Reported to Be True

Android smartphone may be the king of smartphone right now. It offers different taste and experience than other OS. Even other OS smartphone are also give what they have to people, but consumers can choose what suits them. Indeed, consumers know what they want from the producers which in this case are the manufacturer from any countries.

Earlier today we’ve told you about a report claiming that the Nexus 5 will be developed by LG, just like it happened with its predecessor, the Nexus 4. Well, the infamous @evleaks thinks otherwise, saying that the next-gen Nexus smartphone will be a Motorola handset.

Each and every smartphone enthusiast knows about @evleaks, but if you don’t learn he has made a name for himself on the scene by leaking info and pictures of unreleased products and his reports are most of the time accurate.

This time @evleaks though it’s about time to dismiss some rumors about an alleged Nexus 5 photo that made the headlines over the past couple of days. Evan Bass claims that the “Nexus 5 [we've seen in leaked pictures] is probably the LG Optimus L9 II,” adding that the Nexus 5 will most likely be a Motorola handset. He also mentions about the name of Nexus 4 v2.

@evleaks’ claims check out with Tailor Wimberly’s report saying that we will see a Motorola Nexus 5 in Q4 2013. Wimberly has been pretty accurate with the Moto X rumors, thus we are tempted to believe his reports. The same source said that the Nexus 5 will be different from the Moto X Google Edition, which keeps us wondering about the smartphone’s technical specifications.
Anyway, it reports are indicating that Google plans have a Nexus 4 price point approach for the Nexus 5, too. Therefore we might see the next-gen Nexus smartphone selling through Google Play at a price starting $299.

But will the Motorola Nexus 5 cannibalize Moto X’s sales? No, it won’t as the two smartphones aim at different public segments. The Moto X will be like an iPhone of Android world, an easy to use smartphone that packs a couple of cool features, but which will be the most customizable smartphone ever in terms of design. A smartphone designed for the masses. On the other hand the Nexus 5 will be an affordable terminal with technical specifications placing it at the border between mid-range and high-end segments, with unlocked bootloader and stock Android, aiming at the tech savvy type.

Next Release of Android 4.3 Will Include Bluetooth Smart Support

For a great deal of the past six months or so, Droidsters had been preparing themselves to tuck into some delicious Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie as the very next iteration, but with logs for Android 4.3 popping up across the Interwebs, that notion was knocked on the head late last month.

When Google took to the stage yesterday in its mammoth 3+ hour I/O keynote speech, many presumed Android 4.3 was going to be one of the main topics of conversation. Unfortunately, there was no mention of the forthcoming update to the Google mobile OS, but reports today suggest that it is, at least, heading our way in the near future, and will feature, among other things, support for Bluetooth Smart.

With the logs emerging and rumor mill in full flow, we shouldn’t feel too foolish for thinking Android 4.3 would manifest itself at yesterday’s showpiece, but it looks as though Google is not quite in those advanced stages with it just yet.

Still, with Bluetooth Special Interest Group having sent out a press email yesterday just after the initial Google I/O fanfare regarding an upcoming Bluetooth Smart-supporting update to Android, we shouldn’t have to wait more than a couple of months to see what Android 4.3 will bring to the fore.

Although we know there will be quite a few new features and alterations in line for Android 4.3 besides support for Bluetooth Smart, precious little is actually known of what Google plans to include. Bluetooth Smart, which is advanced in that it offers a comparable communication range to traditional Bluetooth but on less power, is already supported by the likes of Apple, Microsoft and BlackBerry, and although Android and Google is usually first to the punch when it comes to newer technologies and hardware, in this case it appears to be trailing.

While Bluetooth Smart will be a welcome feature, the tech world is eager to learn of some of the more exciting new entries to the Android fold, and with I/O still running over at the Moscone Center, now would seem as apt a time as any for such details to emerge.

What kinds of new Android 4.3 features would you like to see in this upcoming update? Please do share your thoughts via the usual mediums below!

Download CyanogenMod 10.1 nightly builds for the HTC One

There is some good news for all those HTC One owners who are keen to try out CyanogenMod 10.1, official nightly builds are now available for the GSM version and the Sprint variant.

Codenamed M7 – after the internal development name of the device, the nightly builds aren't yet considered stable but are working sufficiently well for enthusiasts to use. The biggest bug at the moment seems to be that the audio on outgoing calls can be “hit or miss”. The current workaround is to enable the ‘touch sounds' and start a call using the dial pad, that way you will have audio on the outgoing call. This doesn't affect incoming calls which are behaving normally.

The steps to get CM10.1 on your HTC are pretty much the same as for other devices. The bootloader needs to be unlocked and ClockwordMod-Recovery installed. The the CM10.1 build needs to be copied over along with the Google apps. A quick boot into recovery mode will allow the CM10.1 firmware to be flashed onto the device (along with the Google apps) and after a reboot CyanogenMod 10.1 should be running rather than the factory version of Android supplied by HTC.

CyanogenMod is a free, custom firmware based on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and is designed to increase performance and reliability over the stock version of Android. But be warned, you flash at your own risk and by replacing HTC's firmware you void your warranty. If you hate HTC Sense 5 and don't get on with BlinkFeed then CM10.1 might be the way to go, but it is worth noting the other features which don't currently work including the IR blaster and Wi-Fi Calling for T-Mobile.

There are wiki pages for the M7 (GSM) and the M7 (Sprint) variants  with some preliminary information and the nightly builds can be downloaded from the two different M7 download sections (GSM or Sprint) of the CyanogenMod site.

BlackBerry Messenger Across iOS And Android Will be Possible Soon

BlackBerry Messenger will hit both the Google Play and iOS App Stores this summer, and will be absolutely free of charge from the get-go. Those looking to get in on BBM will need to be running fairly recent versions of both iOS and Android, with the requirements set at a minimum of iOS 6 for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for those on the Google mobile OS.

BlackBerry is on the cusp of turning its proprietary BlackBerry Messenger service (BBM) into a multi-platform experience. Keeping BBM specific to the company’s own devices worked wonders when the company was flying high atop the market, but in looking to reestablish its presence in the iOS / Android-dominated market, BlackBerry is now looking to spread its popular messaging tool to users of those two pivotal platforms.

Speaking of the company’s decision to take BBM to multiple platforms, the company’s CEO Thorsten Heins said: "It’s time to bring BBM to a greater audience . . no matter what mobile device they carry."

Although the decision is not perhaps all that surprising given BlackBerry’s recent plight, it is one of intrigue. BBM’s exclusivity has tended to work in BlackBerry’s favor, drawing in new consumers wishing to be a part of the popular network. But as the company continued to stick with the tired style of keyboarded handset while the likes of Samsung, HTC and Apple flourished with more contemporary designs, BlackBerry definitely lost its way somewhat.

The new-look BBM will no doubt go head-to-head with the likes of WhatsApp, a very well established cross-platform app which already boasts millions of users. Heins also promised that the experience of BBM on both iOS and Android would be fully-fledged, rather than a half-baked effort cooked up as a marketing ruse, adding: "We’re starting with messaging and groups, but we’ll bring voice, screen share, and of course, channels later on."

Samsung Galaxy SIV Specification and Reviews, Still on Hot Rumor

Samsung’s main high-end handset will be the Galaxy S4 this year, and there’s no question about it, and there are already plenty of rumors offering details about the Galaxy S4’s design, specs, features and release dates.

With over a month to go until the product is announced we take a look at what’s being reported about the upcoming flagship device, at least up to know.

Product name and model number

Samsung made a lot of fuss about the product name of the Galaxy S3 last year at a time when Apple decided to drop the “3” from the “iPad 3” tablet and call the device simply the “iPad.” At the time it was speculated that the company could do the same with the iPhone – something that didn’t happen – and that other handset and tablet makers could follow suit when naming future device generations.

In the end, the third Galaxy S model was logically named “Galaxy S3,” a brand that Samsung managed to impose to worldwide carriers, especially U.S.-based ones.

This year, the fourth-gen Galaxy S model is already confirmed to be called the Galaxy S4, at least if a Samsung exec is to be believed. And we’re almost certain that will be the product name of the device. Furthermore, we’re also certain that worldwide carriers will use the same product name for the device, especially considering the popularity of its predecessor.

Speaking of popularity, Samsung is apparently expecting to sell 10 million Galaxy S4 units per month, at least if a report based on supply chain leaked data is to be believed, which would most likely make the handset the best sold Android device in the world. Update 1 (March 4, 2013): An analyst company has recently said that Galaxy S4 sales would top 100 million, with manufacturing requirements from third-party suppliers expected to somewhat hurt Apple’s own supply chain.

When it comes to model number, the Galaxy S4 is almost confirmed to be baptized the GT-I9500 internally (the device is apparently also known as “Altius” or Project J,) with variations of this product name describing international and LTE models – in fact a GT-I9500X model number has already been spotted on Samsung’s website in early January.

AT&T’s Galaxy S4 model number is believed to be SGH-I337, while one of the South Korean Galaxy S4 versions is said to have the SHV-E300S model number.

Update 1 (March 4, 2013): A variety of reports claim that Project J doesn’t include only one product, the Galaxy S4, but two others, the Galaxy S4 mini and an unconfirmed Galaxy Watch (that’s what we’re calling it until we find out more details about it).

Announcement and launch

Early reports suggested that the Galaxy S4 could arrive at CES 2013 in January or MWC 2013 in February, but the device was a no-show in Las Vegas (although we did talk to Samsung about the device at the event,) and it appears it won’t be present in Barcelona, Spain, either, at least not officially. The handset is said to have been shown behind closed doors at CES, but we have no idea whether Samsung will take a similar approach for MWC.

The most recent reports suggest that Samsung will hold a special Mobile Unpacked event in the U.S. at some point in March, with March 15 being the currently rumored date.

Update 1 (March 4, 2013): The Galaxy S4 announcement even will take place in New York on March 14, with Android Authority covering the show live for you. The event will be livestreamed on YouTube and aired in Times Square, in case you happen to have time to enjoy the whole presentation. Meanwhile, you can enjoy the first teaser video, although don’t expect to get a glimpse at the device just yet.

Following the announcement, the handset will start shipping in certain European markets by early April and head to other markets in the months after that. U.S. carriers are said to start selling the device in May or June, therefore about a year after stocking the Galaxy S3.

Update 1 (March 4, 2013): However, a leaked report from a South Korean analyst company reveals that the Galaxy S4 could be launched in the weeks following the official announcement, or sometime in March, although there’s no actual launch date available yet. The Galaxy S4 mini also has its own rumored release date, with some reports saying that the handset will hit stores at some point in May.

We expect the Galaxy S4 to come with a high-end price, although it should be fairly affordable when purchased with new contracts. Specific details regarding pricing structure for the Galaxy S4 is not available at this time.

Hardware

The Galaxy S4 is rumored to be slightly bigger than its predecessor, sporting a 4.99-/5-inch Super AMOLED Full HD resolution display – Full HD panels seem to be a must-have feature for this year’s high-end Android handsets. But we have no idea whether the display will feature Samsung’s Youm flexible display technology – which was demoed at CES 2013 as well – or whether only other Samsung devices will feature Youm displays this year.

While some reports say that Samsung will use its eight-core Exynos 5 Octa processor that was unveiled a few weeks ago at CES in the Galaxy Note 3, the Galaxy S4 is also rumored to pack the same CPU. The Exynos 5 Octa is expected to deliver improved performance but also enhanced battery life thanks to its big.LITTLE chip technology.

Other Galaxy S4 hardware features will reportedly include an eight-core Mali-T658 GPU, 2GB of RAM, 13-megapixel main camera (the first images taken with Galaxy S4 images have been apparently leaked,) 16/32/64GB of storage (will Samsung also go to 128GB of built-in memory, microSD card not included?) a 2600mAh battery (if not bigger), NFC, LTE and Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean right out of the box (at least according to some leaked benchmarks).

Update 1 (March 4, 2013): Since we initially published this article (about a month ago,) there was a lot of speculation regarding the Galaxy S4′s processor. More and more reports have hit the web saying that the Galaxy S4 will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor instead of an Exynos 5 Octa. The rumor was then slightly changed, as an analyst said that the handset will come in multiple versions, with LTE-enabled Galaxy S4 models to sport Qualcomm’s CPU, while non-LTE variants to pack Samsung’s latest processor.

However, in spite of all those reports, a fresh AnTuTu benchmark seems to suggest that the Galaxy S4 will use Samsung’s eight-core processor and will have LTE support, thus implying that a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 may not be in the picture after all. The same benchmark test reveals that the Galaxy S4 will indeed have a 4.99-inch touchscreen display with 1920 x 1080 resolution (Full HD), 2GB of RAM, PowerVR SGX 544MP GPU, 16/32GB of memory, 13-megapixel camera, 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean under the hood.

Furthermore, a rumor also claimed that the Galaxy S4 will not pack an AMOLED display, which would be replaced by an LCD variant, although we’ll have to wait for Samsung’s event to solve this particular mystery.

Special features

In addition to what we have already mentioned, there are several reports out there detailing certain special features for the Galaxy S4.

Samsung will reportedly drop the PenTile display technology, a criticized feature of many Android devices depending on who you ask, and adopt a new hexagon-based matrix for the Galaxy S4, and possibly other devices. Production of 4.99-inch panels is reportedly underway ahead of the early April launch.

Update 1 (March 4, 2013): As we have already said just above, a new rumor says that Samsung will replace AMOLED with LCD for its Galaxy S4, and while that report did not say anything about a hexagon-based matrix, it certainly looks like Samsung is ready to ditch PenTile displays – not that any of this is confirmed yet.

Speaking about display improvements, we’ll also mention different ways to interact with the handset, excluding the regular touch input. The handset is said to sport floating touch gestures, something that could help Samsung differentiate its flagship product from the bulk of Android handsets out there.

Update 1 (March 4, 2013): The gestured-based interface we saw in earlier reports seems to be confirmed by a new rumor that says the Galaxy S4 not feature an S Pen, but that it will offer support for more gestures.

Eye Pause and Eye Scroll eye tracking technologies are also said to be available on the Galaxy S4, to further enhance the way users interact with the device.

Since we’re touching on software features, we’ll add that the South Korean Android maker is also rumored to kick off a new software update policy starting with its Galaxy S4, which could mean that Android updates will become available to certain Samsung devices a lot faster than before, although the move may also have unwanted effects for certain consumers.

Finally, wireless charging is another feature that will be available to future Galaxy S4 owners, with the device ready to offer support for QI wireless charging technology. However, the back plate and charger are supposed to be sold separately, and they’ll most likely be available to consumers after the device hits stores.

Update 1 (March 4, 2013): Additional reports have revealed that the Galaxy S4 will offer its own Photo Sphere-like feature called Samsung Orb. Moreover, the handset could offer some sort of health-related features, with a new accessory like the smartwatch we mentioned earlier possibly being used to deliver this rumored health functionality.

On top of that, the Galaxy S4 is almost certainly going to feature a NFC-based Visa payWave integration, as Samsung and Visa have announced at MWC 2013 a few days ago a multi-device partnership that will see the payWave mobile payment app pre-loaded on future NFC-ready Galaxy smartphones.

Design

You may have noticed that we didn’t start talking about the Galaxy S4 design from the beginning of the article, as one would when talking about an upcoming device, because we have no idea what the handset will look like.

As you can see, there are already several purported images out in the wild that show the Galaxy S4, but none of them has been confirmed so far, with some of them already having been proven as concepts.

Samsung managed to keep the Galaxy S3 final design under wraps last year, although we’ve seen plenty of Galaxy S3 leaks prior to its early May 2012 announcement, so we expect the company to do the same with the Galaxy S4. That doesn’t mean we won’t see even more leaked images in the coming weeks, because that’s surely going to happen.

Update 1 (March 4, 2013): A few recently surfaced images - blurry, dark and questionable - are said to show the design lines of the Galaxy S4, although there’s still no clear Galaxy S4 leak in the wild. If these images are to be trusted, then we may see Samsung use a design that’s more similar to the Galaxy S2 than the Galaxy S3.

Also worth mentioning is the fact that Eldar Murtazin says the Galaxy S4 will have a plastic shell, a feature that will certainly make the HTC One with its slick unibody design look even better.

Will the Galaxy S4 look like Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2? Will it sport a totally different design? Will it keep the Home button? Will it be available in more colors right from launch? While we think we have a general idea of the phone’s hardware and potential special features we can’t answer these design-related questions right now.

Update 1 (March 4, 2013): A recent report does say that the Galaxy S4 will come in two color versions and three capacities at launch, although we definitely expect Samsung to offer the handset in various other colors in the months following the official release.

We’ll remind you that nothing is yet official, and these Galaxy S4 reports, no matter how trusted the source is, are unconfirmed, so take everything with a grain of salt for now. But we’ll keep close tabs on the Galaxy S4 rumor mill, as more leaks and rumors are certainly going to hit the web in the coming months.

What would you like to get from the Galaxy S4?

Update 1 (March 4, 2013): We have more questions for you though!  What do you think the Galaxy S4 needs to outshine the HTC One? Do you think Samsung’s flagship will disappoint in any way?

Intel outs Android 4.2.2 alpha dev code dual-boot with Windows 8

What we expect for may be come true. To have such mobile phone with dual boot option. Intel is on a mission to prove that it isn’t too late to catch up to other chipset manufacturers yet in the ever-growing world of Android. And its latest move involves releasing Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean developer code that has been optimized for Intel hardware.

Although Intel has been a bit slow with the updates, at least they have been coming out more consistently over the past year. The developers at its own Open Source Technology Center have no doubt been hard at work over the last six months, which is why the world can now enjoy access to Intel-optimized Android 4.2.2 alpha dev code.

So what exactly does this new release code bring to the table, anyway? For starters, it now offers UEFI boot support, as well as support for dual-booting with Microsoft’s Windows 8. It is also powered by the Linux 3.8 kernel now and includes an interactive installer which should make it easier to work with.

Intel warns all those who intend on downloading and using this new release about bugs and general pre-alpha quality issues. So while this is mostly good news, you should know that if you hit the source code below, you are doing it at your own risk.

Huawei Ascend Mate Reveals 6.1" Quad-Core Android with a 1080p Resolution

Currently, another call from Android devices sounded from Chinese manufacturer. Richard Yu Huawei Chairman of devices showed off the Ascend Mate - a 6.1" quad-core Android smartphone with a 1080p resolution At a Huawei store in Guangzhou, China.

The device is said to be powered by a quad-core K3V3 chip clocked at 1.8 GHz, and offer a 4000 mAh battery, 9.9 mm frame and a screen with the impressive 361 ppi density. Richard Yu shared that the display is of the LTPS type, meaning low temperature polysilicon.

Prior to Richard Yu's demonstration of the Ascend Mate Huawei's Senior Vice President Yu Chengdong confirmed the company is working on such a device.

The Ascend Mate should make an appearance at CES, alongside the 5" Ascend D2, and should cost around $480 (¥3000).
It remains to be seen what version of Android the Ascend Mate will be running but Jelly Bean is a safe bet.

So for those who want to get this phablet on their hands and try to use another big-screen phone should wait for a moment. Let's check it out from this video.

LG Nexus Phone Shows Up for Sure, Many Photos are available

Another nexus phoes apparently will get to the reality. This time the phone which is called LG E960 or also called Mako is really amazing to compete with the other devices. This nexus device may become this year's nexus device or also named Google Optimus Nexus.

Beside the high-quality photos there is not much new information about the LG Nexus phone. The pre-production phone these guys have runs currently the latest Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2. On the front, there's a 4.7-inch screen with a resolution of 768x1280px. On the back, there's a 8 megapixel camera.

The real disappointment is on the inside. Despite the presence of the powerful quad-core Qualcomm chipset with 2GB of RAM, the built-in storage is only 8GB and there's no card slot for expansion. Judging on the limited storage, LG wouldn't like it for their Optimus Nexus phone to compete with their other flagships. It's much like how Samsung supplied a measly 5 megapixel camera on their Galaxy Nexus.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is Officially Announced by Google, Let’s Take a Look Inside

Android currently becomes more advance and step ahead from another operating system in Smartphone. Google finally announced the next version of Android OS carrying the name Jelly Bean, Android 4.1, to include several new features and performance updates.

After Android OS masters the market of Smartphone around the world to include the famous Ice Cream Sandwich, including Samsung, HTC, and other mobile phone, now they really want another wins from Windows Phones.

Features and Performances under the name project Butter

Firstly, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean focuses on its performance, which is specifically improving UI responsiveness of the system. Google has dedicated a whole project codenamed Butter to improving Android performance. By making the vsync of the screen at a constant 60 frames per second, it makes the UI smooth as, you've guessed it, butter.

It even goes as far as to anticipating where your finger is and start drawing from that point to make the UI appear even smoother. Google showed two Galaxy Nexus smartphones, one running Ice Cream Sandwich and the other Jelly Bean to demonstrate the huge difference that Project Butter makes. It's really quite impressive.

Keyboard and voice input updates

Looking at the the keyboard typing of Jelly Bean is also improved to better and more accurate predictive input and extended dictionary. On top of that, Voice Typing in now available offline. This means that it no longer requires data connection to work and its performance won't be affected by its slow speed. On the demo it worked pretty well by fixing a misheard word (from Known to Though. Accessibility has also been improved adding new gestures and external support for Brail input.

Camera

Taking photos got more intuitive as well. Jelly Bean brings new UI and gestures, so you can swipe sideways to access the gallery (yes, just like on the WP smartphones). You can then quickly delete images by swiping them off the screen.

Notifications

The notification bar has also seen its fair share of changes. It shows you a more prominent looking clock and allows notifications from various apps like Music, Pulse and Gmail to be expanded to give you more details without having to open the app.

Through an improved notification builder, apps can create notifications that use a larger area, up to 256 dp in height. Three templated notification styles are available:

  • BigTextStyle — a notification that includes a multiline TextView object.
  • BigInboxStyle — a notification the shows any kind of list such as messages, headlines, and so on.
  • BigPictureStyle — a notification that showcases visual content such as a bitmap.

Google Search

The Google search has been significantly altered too. Natural language commands are now supported as Google is obviously ready to mount a serious challenge to Siri. When you initiate a search you get a minimalist design card. What’s really cool is when you swipe to the left it shows you a list of Google Search results.  Google Now is another new part of Google Search, which can show you public transport listings, flight information as well as sports results.

Availability

According to the source, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean will be available in mid-July with a developer SDK preview available right now on the Android Developers website.

This Beta version of ICS has been developed and come with some features that can't be found from the previous alpha ROM released back in December. Insted, this Beta version has been included some features, including:
