Advantages and Disadvantages of Rooting Android Devices

For those who buy Android devices, such as Samsung, Sony Xperia, HTC, LG, etc may may seems confuse to hear such a word of Rooting OS Android devices. I think it is oke the word may seems strange and need a little explanation. On this article i will explain a little about what is the meaning of Rooting, the advantage of it, and the disadvantage you should know before making decision of rooting the devices.

What rooting does:
Rooting your phone does a number of things. It lets you get Superuser access to your root directory (where you can customize things like appearance or performance). It also allows you to flash(flash is rooting terms for install) a different kernel, optimized for the ROM of your choosing.

Advantages of Rooting Your Android:

Run Custom ROMs
ROMs are what I referred to earlier as the developers overtime. They create their own version of Android, a new Operating System, that customizes your smart phone experience. It can change the color of your icons, change the app dock, whether or not you have an app menu, etc. It can do basically anything. With a ROM you can uncap the full potential of your phone.

Installing Special Apps
There are a number of apps on the market that only work while rooted. Screenshot apps, overclocking apps, etc. Just by rooting you are able to do so much more in the Market.

Free Internal Storage
People who have low internal memory can transfer any application from internal memory to SD card after rooting their phone. There are some applications that provide the option by default. But if you want to force move an app by creating a symlink, you must use an app that only works on a rooted phone. So those were about the merits. Nothing’s perfect and there are certain caveats associated with rooting an Android device.

Speed and performance
Kernels are the things that tell your processor what to do, and how to do it. By changing that, you can change your processor speed and voltages. Meaning you are able to do what you love to do, only faster.

Looks
If you have the latest and greatest Android smart phone, you can't deny wanting eye-candy. It's your desire, and the reason you enjoy Android so much. When you root, you can take any imperfections out. If you think it would look better with a blue theme instead of a green one, or you want your favorite color everywhere, you can do it. If you don't like the default layout of the phone, or the styling, you can change it too. You can even make it look like an iPhone. (Though I wouldn't know why you would.)

Customization
This ties into the looks and speed and performance sections. Being able to say that no one around has the same phone as you is nice (iPhone users reading this don't know what it's like). But the moment when you do see someone with your phone, and you can still say your phone is different, is priceless. It gives people warm fuzzies inside.

Disadvantages of Rooting Your Android

Your Phone Might Get Bricked
Not to demotivate you here, but when I tried to root my first Android phone – Samsung Galaxy S – I bricked it and it was in the service center for next 15 to 20 days. No matter how good a rooting tutorial is, it’s a daunting task and if you miss out any step or flash a corrupt zip file (that’s what happened to me) you might end up with a bricked (broken) phone.

Now assuming that you are not a power user, you will have to go to your phone manufacturer’s service center and get your phone fixed. Moreover, if they come to know that the brick or semi-brick has caused because you were trying to root your phone, you might as well be charged for it.

You End up Voiding Phone’s Warranty
As soon as you root your phone, you void your phone’s warranty and if anything happens to your phone even when it’s in the warranty period, the company is going to charge you for the repairs. In some of the phones, you can un-root your phone, but in most of the phones there’s is no going back.

Just in case if your device is rooted, after applying this update the rooting access will be revoked. And please note that apart from I9100, no other model should be applied with this update.

What you need to do before updating your phone:

1. Download the XWLPS Firmware Update Package with Odin3 v1.83. Extract the files, it should be like this.

2. Back up you files on your phone using the steps below. Don’t use KIES to back up the data as it will not support the phone after this update snce it’s a custom ROM firmware.
SMS – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Contacts – Sync with the Gmail application,
Call Log – Call Log and Restore
Images, Songs, Videos, Files – Copy to internal / External SD Card,
APN and MMS Settings – Note down from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names”
3. Minimum charge left in the phone should be 80% so as to ensure that the phone doesn’t get turned Off in the middle of firmware update.

4. Make sure all security suites and firewalls, antivirus and application KIES closed completely until firmware update finishes.

5. Disconnect the phone from computer and enable the USB debugging in your phone from the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging”. The USB Debugging option should be ticked.

Steps to Update Samsung Galaxy S2 with XXLPS Firmware:

1) Download the XWLPS5 update package from this link and Odin 1.83  to your computer and extract the files.

2) Then you open the executable file Odin on your PC and off the phone to enter Download mode. To enter download mode you must press the Volume Down + Center button, then hold both, simultaneously press Power. Then you should see a green robot indicates that you entered into download mode.

4) Once your Galaxy S2 is in download mode, you connect the device to computer via the USB cable original, while Odin’s running on your computer. There you will see that Section ID: COM yellow lights.

If ID: COM does not get yellow, two things can happen:
Need to install USB drivers for your phone on the PC
You must go to Settings -> Wireless & Network -> USB Settings and make sure that the “Samsung KIES” is checked before connecting your phone to your computer.
5) Once ID: COM is in yellow, PDA you select the file “I9100XXLPS_I9100OXALPS_I9100XXLPS_HOME.tar.md5” as shown in the image and click ” Start “to start the firmware update process.

6) After the firmware has been updated successfully, the device automatically restarts. When you see the screen, you should disconnect the USB cable to turn off the device into recovery mode. To do this you must press the Volume Up + Home button, then hold both simultaneously press the power button.

7) In recovery mode, select Wipe data/factory reset and Wipe Cache partition and then reboot the phone by selecting Reboot system now with the help of the volume keys to scroll.
Now you have successfully applied the update of XXLPS in your Samsung Galaxy S2.

Steps To Download and Install Android 4.0.3 ICS on Nexus S (GSM-only)

Android Ice Cream Sandwich was first announced at Google I/O back in May and demoed for the first time along with the release of Google’s third flagship smartphone; Galaxy Nexus. It is an OS which unifies the smartphone and the tablet world together. In case you’re still confused what I’m talking about; Ice Cream Sandwich is an OS which is meant to run on all devices across the board, may it be your phone, tablet, TV, (your imagination goes here), etc.

Steps To Download and Install Android 4.0.3 ICS on Nexus S (GSM-only)
It’s a smart move by Google on their end, since it’s a great chance for them to get rid of software fragmentation once and for all. Being a unified OS, it’s a treat for the end-user and the hard working developers alike.

Here, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Download the official Android 4.0.3 ICS zip file from this link and rename it to ‘update.zip’.

Step 2: Now, copy the downloaded .zip file to the root directory of your Nexus S via USB. Make sure its not inside any folder, it should be out in the open.

Step 3: Power off your Nexus S.

Step 4: Power it back on while holding down the Volume Up button, followed by the Power button.

Step 5: Using the Volume keys on your Nexus S, navigate to the RECOVERY option and select using the Power button.

Step 6: You should be greeted with a scary exclamation mark on the screen, don’t be alarmed when you see it, simply hold down the Power button followed by the Volume up button.

Step 7: Bingo, you’re into your Nexus S recovery menu. Simply select the update from SD card option, select the ‘update.zip’ file you placed in your Nexus S memory in step 2 and hit the Power button to confirm.

Step 8: Sit back, relax, the rest of the process is automated. Once you’re done, select the ‘reboot system now’ option and you’ll boot into Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Install/Flash Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich MIUI Alpha ROM On Galaxy Nexus

MIUI is apparently one of the more popular custom ROMs for Android Operating System on Mobile Phone. Basically known for its distinct looks, enhanced apps for Music/Gallery/Camera and, of course, the enhanced notifications drawer. MIUI is now available for the recently released Galaxy Nexus in the form of an unofficial alpha build that has most features working. Check it out after the jump!

Install/Flash Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich MIUI Alpha ROM On Galaxy Nexus
News of the custom ROM comes from XDA Developers – a popular forum for Android modding and development – in the form of a short post on their official blog in which discuss MIUI for the Galaxy Nexus. Based on Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich released on AOSP and developed by DroidVicious, ViciousMIUI is an unofficial, alpha release of MIUI for the Galaxy Nexus. Since it is an early build, there are plenty of known bugs and as more and more people test the ROM, more bugs are bound to be found.

From XDA:

The build is still an Alpha, but so far it has working:
  • Calls
  • Call audio in and out
  • Data works confirmed 3G and 4G work and are being displayed and registered properly!!
  • SMS messages work!!
  • MMS works when receiving an MMS but you can’t send an MMS yet from internal storage cuz it can’t find it yet.. I’m fixing this now also
  • ADB works, ADB remount is in the next update that I should have up in a few hours..
Please ensure that your Galaxy Nexus has its bootloader unlocked, is rooted and has ClockworkMod Recovery flashed.

Step 1: Download ViciousMIUI [XDA Thread: GSM/LTE] and place it directly under /sdcard directory on your Galaxy Nexus’ internal storage.

Note: Separate .zip files exist for GSM and LTE versions of the Galaxy Nexus. Be sure to download the correct version, otherwise you may damage your device.

Step 2: Shut down your Galaxy Nexus. Once shut down, press and hold Volume Down + Power buttons to boot into ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery.

Step 3: From CWM, take an android backup from backup & restore. This may come in handy if you wish to revert to your phone’s current state after flashing MIUI.

Step 4: Once again, from the main menu, wipe data/factory reset, wipe Dalvik cache.

Step 5: In this step, we will finally flash MIUI to your Galaxy Nexus. Select install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard > [.zip file you downloaded in Step 1].

Step 6: From the main menu, select reboot system now.

If you followed the steps correctly, your Galaxy Nexus will now boot into ViciousMIUI based on Android 4.0.3 ICS.
