What Would Nokia Do if Windows Phone 8 Fails on the Market, Join to Android ?

A member of the Nokia board of directors, Rista Siilasmaa, said i an interview on Finnish TV that Nokia has back up plan if Windows Phone 8 fails on the market. After Nokia clearly stated that they would never use Android on their smartphone, but this might change when WP8 fails to compete with Android phones.

Risto Siilasmaa claimed that the company is happy with how Windows Phone’s latest update is shaping up, with Windows Phone 8 set to bring new features to the platform while removing some of the existing irritating issues. Both Nokia and Microsoft are hoping for a turnaround in fortunes with Windows Phone 8, but if things don’t turn out how everyone hopes, it seems Nokia may have a backup plan up its sleeve.

Many people are going to be quite happy if in fact Nokia joins the Android camp and starts manufacturing some truly high-end devices. However, such a turn of events seems unlikely as the contract between Nokia and Microsoft is said to contain clauses, which force the Finns to focus all their effort on WP.

If Windows Phone 8 does fail to meet expectations, it is conceivable that Nokia could move into the already crowded Android phone market. With the likes of HTC, Samsung and LG already playing in a space that only has a finite amount of money flying around, Android is far from a nailed-on success for anyone, even Nokia.

That said, we’d be all over a Jelly Bean-powered Lumia 900, and we suspect plenty of other technology fans would at least want to give it a look, too. Android’s power, apps and community with Nokia’s undoubted ability to make a gorgeous handset? Yes, please!

However, according to GSMarena.com, there was a contact with the Nokia to make clear statement that there was a miss interpretation of the interview when asked about the plan to change to Android, and there the Nokia give a statement quote: "[...] like any responsible board, we must be prepared for alternatives, but that is not our focus today [...]".

It seems there is another operating system that would be the back up plan of the Nokia, wether it is Android OS or Symbian or Meego. But we are still waiting what it could be the back up plan.
